LOOP – UnderLoop. Barcelona, Spain. 2017
An exploration of movement and stillness observed by video compression algorithms. A few seconds of footage of a landscape composed of moving and still elements, the waves and the rocks, were the starting point of the piece. A process of compression was then applied and repeated, until the process created the piece itself, generating a meditative sequence that provokes both recognition and abstraction.
How to “age” a digital image, how does it disintegrate itself? I was trying to answer these questions when I decided to save an image as a .jpeg for over 4000 times to see what happened. Digital degradation achieved through compression and represented as a process in time.
